Not so great - by comparison May 31, 2010 John I bought this and the KidCo Safeway Gate at the same time, one for the top and one for the bottom of the stairs. I would not recommend this product in several situations. This might be good if mounted to two walls. However, I mounted it to a banister railing. If you are mounting it to a banister railing that has ANY give to it whatsoever this product is not a good choice. The reason is that the latch/locking mechanism is not that great. A shimmy and lift easily opens this gate unless this gate is REALLY pressured tight. Pressure tight is not good for banisters, hence the reason I bought a hardware gate!. The KidCo one had a much better lock to it by comparison. The Summer gate had screw anchors that the other did not, which was nice. However, the screws that came with this one were the really cheap kind that kept stripping. I had to use my own screws. Also the floor stopper has a plastic bottom, no padding. So if you have hardwood floors you might want to purchase some felt for it so that it doesn't scratch the floor. Lots of fluff, but really cheesy parts. If I had to purchase again, I would buy two of the KidCo Safeway Gate for $10 more instead.
A dark shadow fell across our baby gate. In less than 15 minutes our worst nightmare would be bearing down on us. February 22, 2010 Enos Fudrucker (Deepest darkest Redmond, WA, USA) The kit consists of two gate panels, two plastic latches, and a plastic support foot. It also includes thoughtful orange plastic pieces to assist with setup.
Installation is simple - in theory. Adjust the gate to your doorway, then mount the hinges and latches to either side of the opening. Tweak the plastic support foot and latch pins and you're done. It didn't go so well for us, though.
To adjust the gate, you place one gate panel over the other and stick 'em together using four fasteners run through pre-drilled holes. It's not the most graceful system, but it works. Unless you're like us and one of your panels is out of tolerance, in which case you'll spend some time coaxing screws through holes that don't quite align.
With the gate finally adjusted, we bonked into problem #2. our baseboards are made from 1"x3" stock, the perfect height to be neither squarely under nor totally clear of the bottom latch. Their thickness also meant that the top latch, an inch offset from its southern buddy, would put the gate's top pin at the extreme end of its adjustment. On its tippy-toes, in essence, and flimsy. We made do by mounting both latches to a furring strip.
Now, after much cursing and with a knotty, unpainted strip of wood holding up the latches, we tried the gate. Sticky latch mechanisms made it fussy to open and close. Look who struck gold twice in the Defective Infant Gate Hardware Lottery!
We used our winnings (which equaled the purchase price of the Summer Gate to the penny) to purchase a KidCraft G15 gate and have lived happily ever since.
Painted over rust December 10, 2009 Family Doc (Indiana, USA) I purchased 3 of these and the first one opened had peeling paint where it had been painted over rust. I was able to return all 3 without difficulty to Amazon.com
It should also be noted that these are permanent installations, meaning you can't remove the gates from the hinges temporarily. For this reason, I would recommend the KidCo Safeway G20.
Did the trick nicely! October 30, 2009 Glenda L. Johnson (Renton, WA) We got this to prevent our two furbabies from accessing the upstairs. It was pretty easy to install and works great. I love the fact that it is adjustable and also has a stop to not swing over the stairs. It may not keep a "Marly" contained but my Fox/chi and MinPin are well contained.
Love this gate! September 28, 2009 Pamela J. Campbell I love this gate. It has saved me from so much stress. I did alter it tho. I purchased a latch from the hardware store instead of the latch it comes with. The latch it comes with is frustrating in my opinion. It works, but I want to swing the gate to close and have it latch. This it does not do with the one in the package, and my arms are always full of stuff so this feature is a must for me. I love that it swings free, and does not have a bar on the floor for me to trip over. I am a clutz on a good day. I need no help tripping.
I am using it as a pet gate to keep my 4 pawed kids out of my studio. Works wonderfully. being metal they can not chew on it. My only complaint is that it is not taller. (they discontinued the tall version, bummer. I have that one also)
Blessings,
You will not be disappointed.
